If they would hire me, we would be writing posts in html code and uploading them with ftp to the server. There would be no java, php or other crap to make things slow.

I would strongly advise them to hire you.
“Ability to articulate design decisions” would simply lead to “Because it’s awesome that way” if I was to do this job.

Been there on a much smaller scale. Do not want.
Designing UI/UX stuff is fun, but implementing with web technologies is a nightmare.
